Employee Engagement Corporate Culture Intro: Millennials in the Workplace

Is the millennial generation taking over your workplace? Are you an HR professional trying to manage employee communications with a major generation gap within your staff? There is no over-the-counter prescription for this but that is why I am here, as a millennial, to fill in the gap and make sense of this unique group of individuals.

My name is Hannah Greenwood, 25, college graduate and the epitome of all that is the infamous “millennial generation”. I attended a four-year university, received my bachelors in public relations and was sent out into the world like everyone else. With my cellphone attached to my hand, hope in my heart and money on my mind, I searched far and wide for the ideal job that would tickle my interests and pay the bills. Little did I know, I’d be jumping from job to job trying to find the perfect fit only to be told by numerous family members that you can’t always have your cake and eat it too. I always ended up working for companies where I was one of the youngest employees working; fresh out of college and not sure what direction my life was going in. This is, in my eyes, was one of many reasons why my job stability was weak.

Millennials are misunderstood beings that need a voice. We have been categorized in workplaces as lazy, self-entitled and disloyal, despite the many successful young entrepreneurs of our time. My goal is to destroy all stereotypes and open your eyes to the many benefits of having a twenty-something working for your company.

What my blog will be focusing on:

  • Millennials; their perspectives, emotions and experiences within the work environment
  • How to incorporate millennials into the work force and integrate with the other generations
  • How to keep millennials involved and supporting position longevity / growth
  • Tech and Millennials, how they go hand-in-hand when helping your business grow
  • And so much more!

Why Is This Important

In this ever-changing world, we must learn to adapt to our surroundings and the people who reside in it. Different generations mean different upbringing and therefore, present a hairy situation for those in internal communications when it comes to personalities and viewpoints. A corporate culture, regardless of industry, needs several different key players of every age to keep that culture alive. The knowledge that begins with the senior employees will trickle down to the newer employees, thus creating continuous opportunity for the company to prosper.

Conclusion

We millennials do not know everything but we are eager to learn and are willing to take risks. Our older generations are our mentors, friends and idols because they have the knowledge and experience that we all crave so badly. We must all work together to make not only our work a better place but our society as well. It’s all about willingness to understand one another and stepping outside comfort zones. I am so excited to dive deeper into this and help professionals of all types learn to embrace positive change.
